Bringing the outdoors in for older people

Simone and Maria-Elena setting up

Our Growing Buddies project got off to a blooming good start on Friday! A lovely group of 10 people came together in the lovely Abbey Community Centre garden to help us to take the outdoors inside for local older people unable to get out.

Under the brilliant instruction of the wonderful Maria-Elena and Simone, our fab volunteers helped to make beautiful planters using recycled cans and materials and filled them up with easy to look after herbs and flowers. These will then be delivered as presents to older people in the local area unable to get out and enjoy our garden for themselves. They will also be given with cards from us, care instructions and visits from volunteers to help turn their windowsills and balconies into mini-allotments. We hope this will brighten up homes all over the local area!

Even when the beautiful sunshine turned into torrential rain, our brave volunteers carried on regardless and didn’t even blink!

This was the start of a programme of these garden craft workshops and next up it’s salad planters made from recycled plastic bottles and then bird feeders.

We are able to undertake this exciting good neighbours, recycling and gardening project all in one with the support of Olswang Green Seed Fund and Wates, so a big thank you to them. Their support is also helping us to improve the Abbey Community Centre garden for our older users.
