We were in for a treat last Friday when the very talented Olswang Choir dropped in for an afternoon of tea and songs. Led by Patrick, their choir master, 12 singers and a pianist serenaded us with tunes all on the theme of love, as diverse as Ave Verum Corpus to Seasons to Love from Rent the Musical.
Almost 50 people came along to watch and lots of people joined in with the classics too, especially Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkel and All You Need Is Love by The Beatles. The favourite was definitely the Mango Canon though (a playful song about mangos, kiwis and bananas sung in a round!) which was such fun and got everyone singing and dancing!
There was a slight emergency when we had no music stand for the conductor, but we soon rustled up a makeshift one made out of a recycling bin and some pens in true Abbey Community Centre style!
In the interval we had a mini-afternoon tea to wet the whistle and keep the energy up. Karin baked us some wonderful biscuits and her famous Swedish cinnamon buns, which were very popular. Olswang also very generously bought us some delicious and beautifully decorated cakes from the famous Konditor and Cook Bakery, which were shared around and made things extra special for everyone. They were so lovely we decided to raffle two off to raise a little bit of money for the centre too. Marie and Ruth were the lucky winners!
It was a truly magical afternoon and a massive thank you to Olswang LLP for such lovely entertainment and generosity, and to all our CTCers who helped to set up, clear away and run the event.
We hope they come back soon. We’ll get practicing in the meantime!
