There’s nothing we like more than when Abbey is full to the brim with a bustling crowd of happy guests. And November Saturday Club was certainly one of those days! It seemed like everyone in Kilburn had come down for our clothes swap – the perfect way to get out with the old and in with the new.
Getting prepared, sorting, folding, and setting some ground rules as the queue grows outside… Thanks to CTC volunteers Margaret, Debbie, Maria Elena and Martha, who manned the clothes drop-off point, and to Irene and Marie for manning the tea and coffee stand.
A couple of other big thank yous are due. We are very grateful to West London Waste (http://westlondonwaste.gov.uk/) from whom we borrowed clothes rails, coathangers and mirrors. Lots of Brent residents (one of their key recycling areas) came to the event as Abbey sits right on the border.
We also couldn’t have held the event without help from the brilliant NCS The Challenge volunteers. 13 young people helped organise the room, changing room, and clothes counting stations to make the clothes-swap run like clockwork. They even borrowed some coat rails from TK Maxx on Kilburn High Road and wheeled them all the way here. They also took the left over clothes to the charity shop at the end of the swap (though there weren’t many left!)
Thank you guys, you were fantastic!
Some very happy swappers with their chosen items:
Thanks also to everyone who helped make lunch (cheese sandwiches, sausages rolls and cakes). And Prabhat cooked up some amazing lentil soup to ward off the winter chill. As usual, thanks to May for her wonderful photography and to DJ Dave for the banging tunes!
As well as getting everyone together for lunch, refreshing everyone’s wardrobes in a sustainable way and having loads of fun, we also raised £129.02 from ticket proceeds (50p entry) and our raffle. A bonus! We’ll channel this back into future Saturday club activities. Another Swap event is definitely due next year – perhaps with books this time.
Our next Saturday Club will be held on the 17th December, and we’ll be having a festive lunch and Christmassy bingo. Until then!
